Pests and the Diseases They Carry
Pest Control plays an important role in the fight to stop the transmission and eliminate the spread of numerous viruses and diseases. Not to mention keeping your family and pets safe and healthy. Insects and rodents are vectors for carrying infectious pathogens and transmitting diseases.
Cockroaches – Salmonellosis, Shigellosis, Gastroenteritis and Hepatitis A. Cockroaches can cause allergies and trigger asthma attacks, especially in children. Cockroaches need daily consumption of water. Don’t leave dishes in the sink with water in them. Repair any leaky pipes or dripping taps. Remove the water and humidity that pests, including termites, roaches and ants, need to survive.
Mosquitoes – There are many viruses of major public health importance that are transmitted by a variety of mosquitoes (Chikungunya Virus, Dengue Fever, Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, West Nile Virus and Zika Virus). Mosquitoes breed in soft, moist soil or stagnant water sources such as storm drains, old tires, clogged gutters and birdbaths. Female mosquitoes need protein to lay their eggs and get it by feeding on warm-blooded creatures. If a mosquito bites an infected animal or a person, then bites you, it can pass the disease to your blood through its saliva.
Ticks – Lyme disease, tick-borne meningoencephalitis, Crimean–Congo Hemorrhagic Fever, Ttick-Borne Relapsing Fever, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Tularemia, Heartland Virus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Typhus, Rickettsial diseases (spotted fever and Q fever), and Boutonneuse Fever. A humid spring creates conditions conducive for a tick outbreak in early summer. Increased humidity creates the ideal environment for ticks. American dog ticks are most numerous along roadsides, paths, old fields, marshy areas and trails in brushy woodlands or meadows with tall grass or weeds.
Rats/Mice – Leptospirosis, Rat-bite fever and Salmonellosis. Rats and mice transmit diseases, transport fleas, mites, ticks, and lice, trigger asthma attacks in children and cause significant damage to the home by gnawing through electrical wiring causing fires. Rodents can squeeze through spaces as small as a coin and create holes in the foundation for easy entryways.
According to the Department of Public Health for the City and County of San Francisco, and pursuant to their Order…Residents may leave to provide or receive certain “essential” services.
